Dumbbells & Discoveries – The Moment I Saw Muscle
How picking up weights changed how I saw myself
For the longest time, I thought real strength could only be built in a gym, under fluorescent lights, surrounded by clanking machines and heavy lifters. But life — especially lockdown life — had other plans.
When the world stood still during the pandemic, I finally had time. Time to rest. Time to reflect. Time to move. That’s when I started training at home, relying only on my body weight and a mat. It felt simple — no fancy equipment, no gym mirrors — just me, gravity, and a decision to show up for myself.
At first, I didn’t expect much. But slowly, I began to notice little changes: firmer arm here, a tighter waistline there. The kind of transformation that only you notice first. It was subtle, but it was enough to spark something in me.
I wanted more — not just results, but growth. So, I reached for dumbbells.
I picked up a pair of dumbbells — nothing fancy, just enough to challenge me. And it felt like crossing a line, not just physically but mentally. For once, I wasn’t trying to shrink myself. I was trying to grow.

I wasn’t rushing. I was listening — to my body, my energy, my limits. And that became my secret sauce. When soreness came — deep and honest — it wasn’t punishment. It was proof that parts of me were waking up. Muscles I’d never met before started introducing themselves. I gave them names. I welcomed them.
I studied. I experimented. I evolved.
Some exercises aligned with my biomechanics; others didn’t. I honoured that. Romanian Deadlifts became my power move. Hip Thrust? Meh. Just didn’t vibe with me. So I stuck with what felt good and kept learning along the way.
This is the kind of leadership I practice in my own body — clear, responsive, intentional. And it’s what I share with others now. Strength isn’t built in chaos; it’s built in conversation. And every rep is a chance to discover who you really are.
